Michael Mann’s Heat is one of the classic heist movies, pitting Robert De Niro’s expert thief Neil McCauley against Al Pacino’s Lt. Vincent Hanna. If you are looking for guns online on GunBroker.com for the next gun to add to your collection, try one of these iconic guns of Heat movie.
McCauley’s Sidearm: HK USP
McCauley’s main sidearm in the early scenes, starting with the armored car robbery that kicks off the events of the movie, is an HK USP. It is not seen very well during the movie, though the grip and shape of the back controls are easy to see. He later gets rid of the USP as it could be used as evidence against him.
Lt. Hanna’s Pistol: Colt M1911A1 Series 80 Officers ACP
Lt. Hanna, a Marine vet, uses an ivory-gripped Colt M1911A1 Series 80 Officers ACP. It has a full-sized trigger and ring hammer. He usually carries it in a waist crossdraw holster. Hanna performs a press check on it in an unorthodox way that was seen in Mann’s film Thief. This is the handgun he uses in the final chase against McCauley.
McCauley’s New Gun: SIG Sauer P220
After McCauley ditches his original USP, he uses a SIG Sauer P220 for the rest of the movie. It can clearly be seen during the airport showdown. McCauley also performs a press check on his handgun, though he dangerously puts his hand over the muzzle while his thumb is inside the trigger guard.
Robbery Carbines: Colt Models 654 and 733
McCauley uses a Colt Model 654 carbine during the armored car robbery. It was likely cobbled together with a GAU 5A upper or an SP1 upper to make it fully automatic. Val Kilmer’s Chris Shiherlis uses a Model 733 short-barreled carbine during the car robbery. Both Shiherlis and McCauley used the 733 during the bank robbery. They use it during the running shootout in one of the most famous scenes of the movie.
During the same scene, Lt. Hanna uses an FN FNC 80. He uses it to great effect when Tom Sizemore’s Michael Cheritto takes a hostage during the running gunfight.
Shiherlis’ Poster Rifle: HK91A2
Shiherlis saves McCauley from the assassin at the drive-in with an HK91A2 fitted with a bipod. This is also what he is holding on the movie’s poster.
LAPD Rifles: M16A1
The M16A1, with A2 handguards, is used by many of the movie’s LAPD detectives and some SWAT officers. Mann instructed the actors to fire in semi-automatic mode only.
LAPD Shotguns: Remington 870
Real police officers commonly use Remington shotguns, and some of the LAPD use Remington 870s during the bank robbery shootout. One officer pursues McCauley and Shiherlis with one. It remains one of the most common shotguns on the market, as well.
Other Shotguns From the Movie: Mossberg 500 and 590
Officers also use Mossberg 500s and 590s, other common police shotguns, which officers use throughout the movie. Hanna grabs one during his final chase of McCauley.
