There are many new product introductions in 2023 that cowboy action connoisseurs will be happy about. Show had a fairly good number of new guns as far as the “Cowboy Gun” category goes. Most of the new introductions for this year are considered “Old West”, while there are some “New West” and a couple that seem to have been made for the “Space Cowboys” among us. Take a look and enjoy this roundup of cowboy action guns at GunBroker.com!
Shotguns were the unsung firearms of the Old West. Kept behind the cabin door or over the fireplace, they provided meat for the table and protection. This Turkish-made scattergun called the “Road Agent” has real 19th Century flavor; you can almost envision it in the hands of Black Bart. Perfect for Cowboy Action Shooting beginners, it is very reasonably priced. It has a box-lock type action, but external hammers with a de-cocker safety. The short barrels have interchangeable choke tubes and 5 are provided. It has an aluminum receiver that is black anodized and photo-engraved. The Turkish walnut butt-stock has a pistol grip, is checkered and has a ventilated recoil pad. Double triggers enable instant barrel selection.
Among cowboy action shooters Bond Arms handguns are the top choice for derringer side matches. They come in a variety of calibers like .38/.357 and even .45 Colt/.410. However, it hasn’t been until very recently that Bond Arms has chambered a derringer in .22 LR. As I’ve mentioned about other guns, this new model may be the perfect understudy and practice gun for the same type of derringers in centerfire calibers. It’s built from stainless steel, on the Cowboy (hand-cannon) frame with a spur trigger, and given a “Rough and Tumble” finish. Some of the features include a patented rebounding hammer, cross-bolt safety, spring-loaded cammed locking lever, and retracting firing pins. This could be the most fun firearm they’ve made in a long time!
The Cimarron Lightning was an invention of Cimarron CEO Mike Harvey. Made along the lines of a reduced sized Single Action Army, it has the birdshead grip frame of the Colt Model 1877 Lightning. This model is not new, but the dual-cylinder version that allows the use of .32 WCF (.32-20) or .32 H&R Magnum cartridges is new. Most everyone is fond of shooting and handload both calibers! It has the classic blued barrel and cylinder, with a color case-hardened frame and hammer. The unique grip frame has a prawl at the top near the hammer that allows good control during fast shooting.
Short barrel scatterguns were favorites of Old West stage coach guards; hence the phrase “riding shotgun.” The CZ Hammer Coach Gun is just like the originals; with functional external hammers, double triggers, handsome 19th Century style color case-hardening on the receiver, and short 20” barrels. Both barrels are cylinder bore choked and chambered for 3” 12 ga. shells. Other features include a checkered pistol grip butt-stock and splinter forend, shell extractor, manual tang safety and gloss black chrome finish. Perfect for Cowboy Action Shooting; holding one will make you feel like an agent for Wells-Fargo!
A new version of the Sidekick made an appearance in 2023. This model has a round-butt, birdshead grip frame and mated with a 3” barrel, will make a dandy little trainer, kit gun or defensive piece. Its 9-shot cylinder is chambered for .22 LR cartridges and it can also be had with a .22 Magnum cylinder and both offer simultaneous ejection of empty cases. Although it has an Old West look, it can be fired in single or double-action modes. The barrel and cylinder are steel and the frame/grip-frame are zinc with a black Cerakote finish; while the grip panels are black polymer. A budget-friendly MSRP will appeal to first-time gun purchasers.
With the supply chain difficulties we are experiencing these days, it makes since to chamber handguns in readily available calibers. For 2023, EMF has taken their Liberty SAA replica and chambered it in 9mm Luger. While it may not be legal for Cowboy Action Shooting, it would certainly be a good understudy for practice. This Liberty version has a 3-1/2” barrel and is blue finished all over with attractive photo-engraving on most surfaces. Mated with this adornment is EMF’s Ultra Ivory one-piece grips that are decorated with a scrimshaw-type Liberty Eagle design. This is a real “Barbeque Gun” any cowboy will appreciate. EMF – The best in Cowboy Guns since 1956.
The lever-gun is America’s rifle and Henry Repeating Arms is now chambering their rifle caliber steel, side-gate lever action in the new Remington .360 Buckhammer. The Henry has traditional styling with a blue-steel finish and checkered American walnut stock. The receiver is drilled and trapped for optics, there’s a transfer bar safety and a black rubber recoil pad. Loading and ejecting is from the right side of the receiver. Based on the .30-30 parent case, the .360 Buckhammer is straight-walled, rimmed and perfect in lever-guns. It is loaded with 180 gr. and 200 gr. Core-Lokt bullets with muzzle velocities of 2,400 and 2,200 FPS respectively.
The Rough Rider Tactical Cowboy by Heritage Arms Manufacturing was introduced in 2023. It can be considered a “Space Cowboy” model, with its racy gray carbon-fiber grips, Picatinny rail, red fiber-optic front sight, and suppressor-ready 6-1/2” barrel. The suppressor does work to a degree on a revolver. The Picatinny rail sans an optic has a notch that serves as a rear sight. This is a single action wheelgun, but unlike most, it has a lever actuated safety built into the left-side recoil shield of the frame. The frame itself is of zinc construction, while the barrel and cylinder are steel and all parts are given a black oxide finish. Another option is a .22 Magnum cylinder, which replaces the .22 LR cylinder and is sold separately.
The quintessential deer rifle is coming back into Marlin Firearm’s lineup in 2023. The model 336 was introduced in 1948. Some of the features are the traditional gold-plated trigger, pistol grip buttstock, and a crossbolt safety. Scuttlebutt has it that the Model 1894, a handgun caliber lever-gun will be reintroduced in the Spring of 2023. Cowboy action shooters will rejoice!
The new POF-USA Tombstone is in a league of it’s own: the “Space Cowboy” category. If you look past the Star Wars appearance, you have a lever action carbine that takes readily available and budget-priced 9mm ammo. It operates just like a Model 1892 lever-gun; it just gets the 9mm cartridges from a detachable box magazine in place of a tube under the barrel. It has an aluminum receiver with side ejection, a large-loop lever, external hammer, plus a cross-bolt safety. The proprietary trigger has a 3.5-pound pull. Atop the receiver is a Picatinny rail with an integrated XS Ghost Ring sight. Surrounding the fluted and ported 16.5” barrel is a 10.5 M-Lock modular receiver rail with integral lower Picatinny rail. The butt-stock is a MagPul SGA with a thick recoil pad, and ambidextrous magazine catches that releases the 20-round magazine.
For 2023 the Wrangler is being offered in two new barrel lengths; the first is a 6-1/2” barrel and the other a 7-1/2” barrel. These economical sixguns shoot readily available .22 LR ammunition; perfect for plinking and practice. They are single action, with a transfer bar mechanism and loading gate interlock to provide security against an accidental discharge. The barrels are cold hammer-forged, resulting in precise rifling that makes for exceptional accuracy and longevity. The grip-frame is patterned after the Single Six and grip panels are checkered synthetic. Sights are fixed, with an integral notch rear and blade front sight. A Cerakote finish makes for both durability and reliability and comes in black, silver and burnt bronze. The cylinders are all black.
Looking like a cross between an Old West single action and a more modern double action revolver, this .357 wheelgun from Silver Creek Firearms is unique. Made with aero-space technology, all the components are machined from solid blocks of 17-4PH stainless steel. The 8” barrel has variable pitch rifling that adds to the accuracy of the gun, plus it is ported, and has a vent rib. An adjustable rear sight is standard, but there’s options for MRD sight mounting or a Picatinny rail for scope attachment. Reminiscent of the 1877 Colt Lightning, it loads from a gate on the right side of the frame and cases are ejected with an ejection rod housed on the right side of the barrel. It also sports a 7-shot cylinder.
This has to be one of the finest single action revolvers being produced today. Based on the Colt SAA, this .45 Colt sixgun has all the features of the original. I chose to feature the polished nickel-plated version that is especially handsome with the contrasting fire-blue screws and ejector rod head. The entire gun is made of 4140 stainless steel, carefully machined, parts hand stoned and put together by skilled gunsmiths. Needless to say, fit and finish are superb. A traditional SA, the chamber under the hammer needs to be kept empty for safety. It can be had in the traditional 4-3/4”, 5-1/2” and 7-1/2” barrel lengths, with a choice of one or two-piece walnut grips. Fancy-grade wood grips are also now available.
The TC9 is chambered in 9mm Luger, taking advantage of readily available ammunition in that caliber. It is being offered in two styles. One is fitted with the grip frame of the Colt 1860 Army percussion revolver, providing a larger grip for users with big hands. The stocks on this gun are one-piece checkered walnut. It is all steel and features a polished blue finish. The second style has the standard-size grip frame of the original Colt SAA and the stocks are two-piece checkered black plastic. Also like the original, it has a color case-hardened frame and hammer, mated with a polished blue barrel, cylinder and grip frame. Both can be had with a 4-3/4” or 5-1/2” barrel.
To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the famous Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle, Uberti-USA has produced a beautiful replica of that famous lever-gun; this version sporting a handy 20” blued, octagonal barrel, a steel color-casehardened receiver and engraving in a style popular in the 19th Century. This is real hand engraving and features scroll designs and game scenes taken from an original period Winchester. The stock is handsomely-figured A-Grade walnut with a satin finish and blue steel, crescent butt-plate. Interestingly, it is being offered in .38/.357 Magnum and .45 Colt, both top-choice Cowboy Action Shooting calibers, rather than the original .44 WCF (.44-40) cartridge. Its “showcase looks” shouldn’t keep new owners from taking this carbine out and shooting it; a gun such as this shouldn’t be a “Safe Queen.”
It has been called the “Gun that Won the West.” The Winchester Model 1873 was introduced 150 years ago as an improvement over the Model 1866 lever action rifle. An iron receiver replaced the brass receiver of the Model 66 and a new, more powerful centerfire cartridge, the .44 WCF (.44-40) also debuted. In tribute, Winchester is offering a commemorative model with a blue steel receiver and 24” octagonal barrel. The receiver is elaborately engraved, with gold filled Winchester logo and accents, plus other 150th Anniversary embellishments. It also has a V/VI Grade checkered, straight wrist walnut butt-stock and rifle-style forend, both satin finished. It has an engraved, blue-steel crescent butt-plate and the receiver top tang is drilled and taped for an optional veneer peep-sight.
