Beyond Flowers: Creative Mother’s Day Gift Ideas?

By Paul Rackley, GunBroker Editor

Come May, every consumer company pushes out Mother’s Day gift ideas. These show up on billboards, TV, magazines and email. This advertising blitz is almost overwhelming. It is also probably a good thing for most men.

I’ve never been the best at giving Mother’s Day gifts. Every now and then I shoot out a golden egg, but most of the time I’m closer to a goose egg. I’m guessing that I’m not the only husband and son who screws up Mother’s Day gifts more often than not.

One of the many reasons for this is the purpose of a gift. Men like useful items as gifts. It’s just part of our logical nature. Because of this, we tend to lean toward giving these type of items as well. It’s from where the whole idea of giving a vacuum cleaner or a toaster comes. We’re not doing it on purpose; it is in our DNA.

Well, since we’re likely to end up with the dogs anyway, I figure we might as well pick up gifts that will be useful to us, if and when, their rejected. Just make sure that there is something that might relate, be it color, purpose or item, to them. Thought, I will admit I’m pretty much guessing.

Mother’s Day Gifts?

In the Hand, On the Shoulder

I doubt that any man has ever understood a woman’s handbag. These things just seem like a bottomless mystery from which all manner of items seem to lay in wait until needed. This doesn’t mean, though, it can’t be handy. Quite a few companies make concealed-carry purses. Some seem pretty nice looking, and I sure like the idea of having a third gun stashed fairly close, even if it is not on body.

Keeping Firearms Safe

Proper gun storage is important for anyone who owns a gun. This includes women. They just want something that looks nicer sitting in the house or heading to the range. Well, there are some companies that produce gun safes, cases and bags in colors other than black, khaki or camouflage. And if they don’t like it, you still have a new gun safe, case or carry bag.

Making the Cut

Every kitchen needs a set of knives. OK, knives might not be the most romantic gift for the wife, but maybe mom will find them useful, and maybe even pretty. Especially, a set of Damascus steel steak or kitchen knives. These knives are gorgeous and useful. Just think about watching the family cutting up chicken or into a juicy ribeye with the latest Mother’s Day gift.

Dressing Up & Down

My brother had a simple recipe for family gifts. He bought dad tools, mom clothes and me stuff that caused damage. Mom liked clothes. I’m not sure she liked what my brother and I bought her, but it’s the thought that counts on Mother’s Day gifts. At least that’s what they say. GunBroker has quite the listings of shirts, boots, gloves, jackets and more, and not all of them strictly for the outdoors and shooting. Of course, it is pretty easy to find hunting, fishing and performance shirts for mothers as well.

Pistol Packin’ Mommas

A friend’s father once bought his wife a pink handled pistol for Mother’s Day. It didn’t go over very well, but, in his defense, she wasn’t real into guns. This doesn’t mean that some women wouldn’t want a new firearm in a pretty color. In fact, it is not hard to find a handgun in colors outside of the traditional. Some have been designed specifically for women, like the SIG SAUER Rose that was developed in collaboration with World Champion Lena Miculek. Guns like these are functional and pretty. That’s a win for both sides, right?

The Long Blade

Yes, I’m reaching here, but I’ve always wanted a real sword, particularly a beautiful Japanese Katana. A nice calvary saber might also look nice over the fireplace. It doesn’t really matter — yes it does, I want a Katana — as long as it both looks good and is functional. That makes it a decoration, right? Also, just imagine the looks of envy as you hack zombies like Michonne in The Walking Dead.
